the lady behind Philippines’ version of a “Facebook”

I found this interesting blog by a UP ComSci student. LJ Regalado is apparently part of an ongoing project to create a social networking site similar to Facebook. According to a Wikipedia entry, Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard University sometime in February 2004 with financial help from Eduardo Saverin. Now, LJ and some partners are starting a similar effort in UP Diliman. Called Eskwela.com, it hopes to invite (initially) UP students in Diliman to register using their school e-mail. With this social networking website, they will be able to find long-lost classmates, check on schedules and subjects, etc. It is a virtual way of sharing school information, which most university students do “offiline” nowadays. Simple idea, but as any social networking service, it became viral and a hit.

You can go to this blog to find out the developments of this local project.

I also wrote about this earlier for INQ7.net Infotech.
