Internet campaigning
Loren Legarda says podcasting “levels the playing field” for candidates. The Internet and innovations related to it (e.g. blogs, podcasting) is proving to be a cheaper way to campaign. SMS campaigns have also been used by some Senatorial candidates (I’ve received text spam from PRO Pinoy apparently from admin senatorial candidate Propero Pichay). But these are the moneyed candidates. For groups like Kabataan, the Internet allows politicans to reach to a more educated segment, as Mong Palatino writes.
A politican tapping the internet is a politician reaching out to an educated segment of our population residing in a vote-rich area. These people are highly respected in their communities who can influence the opinion of others.
Internet campaigning is not just about websites. Social networking (read Friendster) are now used by senatorial candidates like Navy Lieutenant Senior Grade Antonio Trillanes IV to spread the word. Trillanes also blogs.
