Broadband Internet via satellite comes to RP

Broadband Internet via satellite! That’s been a dream for many people who don’t have access to a mobile or landline telecommunications network. However, it appears that the cost of satellite services is going down significantly, allowing companies like Telnor to offer relatively affordable services.

A Norway-based global communications firm is bent on breaking into the Philippine market with its satellite-based broadband Internet service, a Filipino executive overseeing business in Asia Pacific told reporters.

Telnor Satellite Services, a subsidiary of Telnor of Norway, said a Philippine partner is currently working on two projects with the National Telecommunications Commission and the National Power Corp., that are intended as proofs-of-concept for the new service, dubbed broadband global area network (BGAN), Telnor regional manager for Asia Pacific Rudy Ramirez said.
