From a virtual unknown to world acclaim.
“Ako lang ang walang pangalan,” Brillante “Dante” Mendoza wrote in an e-mail a few days before the start of the Cannes Film Festival, where his “Kinatay” (meaning “massacre”) was going to be in competition with films directed by well-known directors and previous Palme d’Or winners Quentin Tarantino, Jane Campion and Lars Von Trier.
In a stunning dark horse triumph, Mendoza won the Best Director prize in the world’s premier festival on Sunday.
Here’s the official list of 2009’s winners.

hahaha! parang manny pacquiao. knockout silang lahat - sina tarantino, ang lee, almodovar, noe, campion, etc. a judge said the film reminded him of godard. which gives a hint to the judges’ biases, i think. if the picture of jesus above the bed of maribel lopez being raped, tortured and dismembered was not there, i think the film wouldn’t have won. that is a strong idea, although not really radical for them. but i’d interpret the judges’ act as strongly anti-christian and even more anti-catholic. and they are sending us a message. the film is about corruption and even if i have not seen the film, i venture to speculate that the subject is about the prevalence of corruption in a “religious/christian” society. so, even if dante did win, there will be many critics (as well as inggiteros) who will denounce the film for its antichrist slant. after all, if i may infer meaning in that “torture under christ” scene/idea, the film suggests christ as myth, incapable of acting on inhuman activity, precisely because he is just that, a picture, which hapless victims like the prostitute cling to delusionally. the basis therefore for our inhumanity is our religion. godard anyone?
